Under Whose Authority?

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
– Jesus [Matthew 28:18]

Dear Isom’s Chapel Family,

Is it possible to have “respect” for authority…
… yet RESIST it at the same time?

I want to believe that I am an obedient person.

I have always strived for excellence.

I value positions of leadership.

HOWEVER…

I need to be honest.
It seems that I have had a “resistance” towards authority for most of my life.  Not EVERYONE in authority, mind you – just the ones I feel don’t value the people UNDERNEATH their authority.
I’ve known great leaders, and not-so-great leaders.

Maybe it’s because for ALL of my life I’ve been second, third, or fourth place in the chain-of-command.  My dad served as an Associate Dean/Vice President for his entire career at Georgia Tech. I thought that was cool.
He was a leader, but didn’t feel the need to be “THE leader.”

For almost all of my life, I have embraced this as a noble position as well.

Ultimately… this is why:

ALL authority falls under ONLY ONE person, and that is Jesus Christ.

EVERYONE else, Christian or not Christian, whether they want to believe it or not, or honor it or not, holds the second, third, or fourth place in the chain-of-command after that.

Whatever YOU are leading,
whether it’s a company, a classroom, your “kin,”
(I wanted to use a k-sounding word that meant family!)
or your cats…

We are GREAT LEADERS when we yield our final authority to Jesus Christ. He LOVES us, and honors us, and

“if WE love HIM, we will follow him, and do what He says.”
Jesus [John 14:15]

Let’s use this summer to rejoice, rejuvenate, and celebrate the ONE who has authority over the heavens AND the earth!

Sincerely,

Your brother in Christ,

Eric
